Presenting various singing groups with different range and genres on one platform.
SINGAPORE, 20 September 2013 – Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay launches the very first edition of VOICES – A Festival of Song from 13 to 15 December 2013. VOICES is a new festival that celebrates the joy of ensemble singing from diverse cultures and this is the first time that we are presenting various genres of ensemble singing on one platform.
Six ticketed programmes and a series of free performances and talks have been planned to enable audiences to discover a wide variety of vocal styles spanning cultures and traditions, such as choral, a cappella and folk singing from around the world, all coming together to share their love for making music through song.
Said Christel Hon, Programming Officer, The Esplanade Co. Ltd: “VOICES presents a wonderful opportunity for professionals, amateurs, community and aspiring singers to come together to experience, appreciate, and even partake in the joy of group singing through the performances, talks, workshops and outdoor sing-a-long sessions. Over three days, audiences will be treated to various forms of ensemble singing as diverse as choral, folk and a cappella performed by local and international vocal groups.”
Ticketed Programmes
Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir - 13 December 2013
The festival begins with a performance by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir at Esplanade Concert Hall. One of the most highly regarded choirs in the world, they have toured extensively in Europe, United States of America, Canada, China, South Korea and Japan, but have never been to Singapore. They have also received ten Grammy nominations over a range of choral and classical categories since 1993 and won a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance in 2006 for their album Da Pacem.
Johann Sebastian Bach - Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, BWV 225
Johannes Brahms - Warum ist das Licht gegeben den Mühseligen, Op.74, No.1
Claude Debussy - Trois Chansons de Charles d’Orleans, L92
Arvo Pärt - Magnificat
Colours – An Evening of A Cappella - 14 December 2013
Colours concert brings together four established Singapore vocal groups, each known for their signature styles and creations using the vocal palette. Four different personalities – Juz-B, Key Elements, MICappella and Vocaluptuous – mix-up a blend of musical colours in this showcase of the Singapore vocal music spectrum. This is also the first time we are presenting four different a cappella groups in one show.
Khöömii - Throat Singers of Mongolia - 14 and 15 December 2013
For something different, audiences can watch Khusugtun from Mongolia perform modern arrangements of Mongolian folk songs using a technique called khöömii (throat singing). The six-member ensemble specialises in this unique art form in which vocal musicians are able to sing at least two distinct musical notes at the same time. An award-winning ensemble at international throat singing competitions, Khusugtun will showcase their unique style of singing through a repertoire that includes a cappella singing as well as musical accompaniment by traditional Mongolian instruments such as the horse-head and grand fiddles and yatga zither.
Workshops
Talks and workshops catering to different levels make up a good component of the festival. For each ticketed performance, we actually have a corresponding workshop which anyone can sign up for, either before or after the performance, to enable one to learn more about that genre. These introductory workshops enable one to learn more about choral, a cappella, and even khöömii singing.
